VAFFANCULO
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia when asked by a Herald reporter how he responds to critics who might question his impartiality as a judge given his public worship. "The judge paused for a second, then looked directly into my lens and said, 'To my critics, I say, 'Vaffanculo,' "punctuating the comment by flicking his right hand from under his chin, Smith said.

A PEACEFUL IRAQ?
This administration and most of the Republican party have been trying to bring out the 'good news' in Iraq. Well, Howard Kaloogian, the California congressional candidate looking to replace Randy "the dukester" Cunningham posted a tranquil picture of Baghdad to show how swimmingly things are going in Iraq. One problem. The picture was taken in Turkey. click link read more

VAGUE LAW AND HARD LOBBYING ADD UP TO BILLIONS FOR BIG OIL
"The big lie about this whole program is that it doesn't cost anything," said Representative Edward J. Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat who tried to block its expansion last July. Uh, THIS MEANS WE WOULD HAVE TO ADMIT TO A MISTAKE,
A STORM ON THE HORIZON
One more concern, as if we didn't have enough.
This week researchers announced that a storm is coming -- the most intense solar maximum in 50 years. The last one was in 1958. It was hardly noticed. The one starting at the end of this year or beginning of next will be noticed significantly more due to advances in technology. In 1958 it didn't bother your cell phone, GPS, computer, satellites and on and on. read more

GUARDING THE NATION
How prepared is this administration for hurricanes, floods, fires, avian flu, terrorist attack and any other problems that could face this nation. Preparation would include potential mobilization of the National Guard (by definition they are here to protect the nation) and their equipment. Here's how ill-prepared we are for any of these events.
The war in Iraq has depleted the National Guard of many of its troops and much of its equipment. Below are some samples of equipment that are in shor t supply.
Machine guns ---------- total 1,088 on hand 150-- % of total 14%
Lightweight rifles--------total 16,839 on hand 788-- % of total 5%
Night vision goggles ------total 127,000 on hand 1,000 --% of total 1%
Flatbed semitrailers -----total 2,287 on hand 180 -- % of total 8%
Armoured carrier humvees--total 2,240 on hand 220-- % of total 10%
Armoured scout humvees---total 3,922on hand 0 -- % of total 0%

Our enemies love that we are in Iraq. Our infrastructure and social programs are falling apart in this country. We lack the homeland protection of the National Guard and their equipment. We are going bankrupt while we destroy two countries. The reason I feel we have not had another terrorist attack in this country. Why waste time attacking us? Just sit back and wait for us to implode, then make your move. As each day goes by I feel safer and more secure. What next? Send our police, firemen and other first responders to Iraq.

STUDY: WARMER SEAS FUEL HURRICANES
Rising ocean surface temperatures are the primary factor fueling a 35-year trend of stronger, more intense hurricanes, scientists report in a new study. The finding backs up the results of two controversial papers published last year that linked increasing hurricane intensity to rising sea-surface temperatures, said Judith Curry, an atmospheric scientist at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. . . . .
